I was a child of the 60’s and 70’s. My generation was born on the heels of the Holocaust, that horrific period in history that ended less than 20 years before my birth, still a fresh wound in the hearts of those who came before me.
It wasn’t until I entered high school that films from the concentration camps started circulating publicly. Classes and school assemblies gave attention to the tragedy that had unfolded. Themes of “Never Again” echoed across the land.
I remember thinking what would I have done, had I lived during those dark days in Europe. I am not Jewish. Would I have participated in acts of anti-Semitism? Would I have accepted the thought culture of the day as “normal” and “right”? I prayed I would have had the courage to stand against this brutal regime. I prayed I would have not been silent.
UNLIKELY HEROS
Corrie ten Boom was a heroine of mine as a teen. She attended my church when she was in her late 80’s. The sight of this diminutive woman with a white bun standing on the front steps to our church is an image permanently seared in my mind.
Corrie’s book and movie, “The Hiding Place,” had just been released. It told of the courage and bravery her family exhibited in Holland during WWII—not only had their family prayed every week for the Jewish people for 100 years leading up to the 1940’s, but when the Nazi’s invaded their country, her family was positioned to respond. They enclosed a hiding place in Corrie’s bedroom, which was able to conceal six people safely from the Gestapo’s grasp.
After a raid, Corrie and 30 other members of her family and community were taken to prison, where her 84-year old father died two weeks later. Corrie and her older sister Betsie were transferred to Ravensbrück concentration camp where Betsie died after 10 months in the camp. Two weeks later, Corrie was released through a clerical error. She was 52 years old.
APATHY AND COMPLICITY
The Holocaust was a brutal time in history that unveiled apathy in the church. While there were brave families like the Ten Boom’s and the Underground Resistance that stood up to the culture of death, the church at large was asleep. Some Christians even participated in anti-Semitic discrimination and brutality, selling out their neighbors for insignificant monetary gain, the equivalent of just a few dollars.
German families closed their eyes to the horror taking place in their own backyards, while the smokestacks polluted their air daily. When the war was over, German citizens were forced to walk single-file through the camps and look on the horrors that had been committed there—piles of dead corpses were in plain sight, and they could no longer look away or feign ignorance.
IT’S TIME TO WAKE UP
Little did I know that the choices Corrie made in her 50’s would mirror choices I would face in my 50’s.
We also have a Holocaust in our own backyards, and the church has by-and-large been asleep, apathetic, and unwilling to raise her voice. The church has been silenced by political correctness, bowing to the opinions of man rather than to the righteousness of God.
The question is, when will enough be enough? Like many, for years I let apathy and inactivity rule, but now I am without excuse. When will we wake up from our slumber and take back our stand to champion the life of infants in the womb and end this silent Holocaust?
A WORD FROM THE LORD
As I went to prayer this week, the Lord began speaking to me about this very issue. This is how He impressed my heart:
“My church is arising into her destiny and purpose. This is the new "Great Awakening" from the "Dark Ages."
In order for My purposes to strengthen and continue, My people must embrace My heart on life issues. My people must be the voice for the voiceless. My people must carry My heart of love and compassion that reaches those who have submitted to abortion and bring My healing love, not shame or condemnation.
The church is at the crossroads. There is no longer an excuse to be asleep as this Holocaust occurs in their homes, their churches, their communities, their nation. My church will be held responsible for they did — or didn't — do.
Excuses do not absolve inaction. I see deep into every heart. I am weeding out apathy, idolatry of self, "political correctness" that opposes My righteousness.
My Branch of Righteousness has sprung up to execute justice and restore righteousness in your land. Do not be counted as one of the fools with no discernment on the matters of My heart.
Choose life.”
HOLOCAUST OF THE INNOCENTS
The church is at the crossroads. The Holocaust of the Innocents is happening now, and we will be held accountable by God and to God for our response and our actions.
Let’s make sure we stand on the side of righteousness and do what is right. May our unified and massive strength be on display.
“If you falter in a day of adversity, your strength is small. Rescue those being dragged off to death, hold back those stumbling to slaughter. If you say, ‘Look, we didn’t know this.’ Won’t He who weighs hearts perceive it? Won’t He who guards your soul know it? Won’t He repay each one according to his deeds?” Proverbs 24:10-12
PRAY
Pray for the church to awaken and arise, shaking off all apathy and inactivity.
Pray for hearts to break over the slaughter of the innocents, and to burn with the fire of the Holy Spirit that propels us into action.
Pray for boldness and courage to sweep over the church as it takes its place as the cultural thought-leaders, bringing people into the light and truth of Messiah.
Pray for love to be the motivation that fuels our fire.
“Whoever pursues righteousness and mercy finds life, prosperity and honor.” Proverbs 21:21
